Renowned heart surgeon Dr Devi Shetty, known for surgical skills and philanthropy, has established himself as an institution builder with Narayana Healthcare. He now ventures into managed healthcare with the newly licensed Narayana Health Insurance. What made you apply for a health insurance licence?
Many years ago, my attempts to discuss managed care model with IRDAI were unresponsive. About six months ago, I revisited them to propose schemes under the sandbox model, presuming a license wouldn't be granted. To my surprise, the executive director and chairman engaged, encouraging me to apply. I informed my team, recognising the IRDAI's eagerness for change. Thanks to chairman Debashish Panda and his team for their swift response, reaffirming the government's commitment to change.

Early life

Shetty was born in London on 6 September to a Hindu family of Indian origin. He was raised in Barnet, North London and has a sister.^[4]^[5] From childhood, he was a member of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, known as the Hare Krishna movement or Hare Krishnas.^[6] His mother is a Gujarati who was raised in Yemen and his father is a TuluBunt from Mangalore.^[7] He attended Queen Elizabeth's School, Barnet,^[8] then went on to graduate from the Bayes Business School at the City St George's, University of London.^[9]
