Culture of Italy and the Italian people
The culture of Italy encompasses the knowledge, beliefs, arts, laws, and customs of the Italian peninsula and of the Italians throughout history. Italy has been the centre of the Roman civilization, the Catholic Church, and of the Renaissance, as well as the starting point of movements with a great international impact such as the Baroque, Neoclassicism, and Futurism and significantly contributed to historical phenomenons such as the Age of Discovery and the Scientific Revolution.[1] Italy is considered a cultural superpower and the Italian peninsula one of the birthplaces of Western civilization.[2][3]

Italy’s Federica Pellegrinijoined an elite company this week, winning her fourth consecutive European Championships title in the 200 freestyle.
The 27-year-old Pellegrini went 1:55.93 to win the 2016 title, touching out Dutch swimmer Femke Heemskerk (1:55.97) to add to her 2010, 2012 and 2014 gold medals.
Pellegrini now becomes just the fourth woman to four-peat the same event at the European Championships.
Yana Klochkova of the Ukraine was the first, winning the 400 IM in 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2004. She would also win shares of the European title in the 200 IM in the same four years – she won outright in 1999, 2002 and 2004, and tied for the gold in 2000.
