On December 11, the University of North Carolina announced 72-year-old Belichick, who previously led the New England Patriots to six Super Bowls titles, had reached a five-year deal to become the school’s next football coach. Belichick, known for his gruff demeanor and trademark hoodie, coached the Patriots for 24 seasons before he and the team amicably split earlier this year. He has never led an NCAA team but does have a connection to the Chapel Hill school. His father, Steve, was an assistant coach at UNC from 1953 through 1955. “I am excited for the opportunity at UNC-Chapel Hill. I grew up around college football with my dad and treasured those times. I have always wanted to coach in college, and now I look forward to building the football program in Chapel Hill,” Belichick said in a statement.
